Buying and Lying: David Trone Will Try Anything to Win
April McClain Delaney’s campaign demands Trone stop misrepresenting himself to voters in the 6th District.
GAITHERSBURG, MD – Yesterday, April McClain Delaney’s counsel sent a cease and desist letter to David Trone, requesting that he stop misrepresenting himself as a current member of congress.
David Trone has spent record sums of money to try to buy back his seat in Maryland’s sixth district, an effort that polling indicates is failing miserably. Perhaps in recognition that he cannot win a fair fight, he has resorted to misrepresenting himself as a current member of congress and asked voters to “re-elect” him.

“While candidates are free to reference prior service, they are not entitled to blur the distinction between former and current officeholding in a way that misleads voters into believing they currently serve in Congress,” wrote David E. Owens, Counsel to April McClain Delaney for Congress. Owens also highlighted the practical ramifications of Trone’s misleading advertising, noting, “Campaign communications implying current officeholding can confuse voters about who represents them and where to seek assistance.”
This tactic is a continuation of a broader, more troubling pattern that highlights David Trone’s belief that his vast personal wealth allows him to operate without scrutiny or accountability. David Trone has a long history of using his resources in unethical ways, including his staffers attempting to infiltrate Jamie Raskin’s campaign in 2016 or Trone donating hundreds of thousands of dollars to far-right Republicans to “buy access”.
“Given his standing in the district, it’s no surprise that Trone would resort to misleading voters,” said Nick London, campaign manager for April McClain Delaney for congress. “David clearly has plenty of money, but he will never have April’s strong record of standing up to Donald Trump and fighting for Maryland’s sixth district.”
